Afflatus (2022)

As an abstract painter, I orchestrate classical compositions from my past memories and display them in an entanglement of spaces, gestures and colours. Adding and subtracting paint layers to allow the painting to breathe, I look into the memories as guides and treat them the way a camera would treat light to produce images. To me light is like a redeemer- as much an expression of the transcendental sense of being alive, redefining the objectivity of things. This distribution of light resonates within the painted layers as it invites the audience to step into the spatial depth of a new illusory scene.
My energetic brush gestures celebrate the smallest power of harmonised chords. Each brush mark was made spontaneously yet deliberate- the marks perhaps mimic a certain form but are quickly dispersed towards abstraction. To me there is no turning back once the marks are on stage. I enjoy the encounter of unexpected events on canvas just as I appreciate them in my everyday life. It is a celebratory act of living this exact moment. Hence, Art is complete only with the presence of afflatus.

서울, 자카르타, 런던을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 신하늘 (Hannah Shin) 작가는 유화 물성이 가지고 있는 투명한 질감을 탐구하며 다양한 방식으로 쌓아올리고 닦아내는 레이어들를 통해 평면 속 신비한 공간감을 표현한다. 매일 주변에서 발견하는 빛과 조형에 대한 신비한 현상들을 관찰하고, 작가만의 직관적 감정, 속도감있는 제스처와 붓질로 회화적 이미지를 새롭게 탄생시킨다.
2013년도에 유니버시티 칼리지 런던 (University College of London) 순수예술 학사를 졸업했고 2018년도에 영국왕립예술대학원 (Royal College of Art) 에서 회화과 석사를 취득했다. 졸업 후 곧바로 “Traversmith CSR Art Programme 2018/19 선정 작가로 발탁되었으며, 서울로 돌아와 세 차례 개인전과 함께 국내외 다수 기획 전시에 참여했다. 또한 자카르타로 많은 왕래를 하며 ISA Art, Andis Gallery 와 함께 전시 및 협업 프로젝트를 여러 차례 진행 하고 있다.
주요 전시로는 <Beyond Girlism> (ISA Art, 자카르타,2020), <신하늘,김용석 이인전> (온유갤러리, 서울,2020), <Pocket of Solitude> (키미아트, 서울, 2020) 등이 있으며 Untitled Miami (2019), Art Jakarta (2019, 2020), Art Moments (2021) 등의 다수의 아트페어에 참여한 경력이 있다. 또한 2019년 “최인아 책방”에서 <젊은아티스트 토크> 로 개인전 및 토크쇼를 진행, 2021년 영국문화예술위원회에서 지원하는 “Hospital Rooms Digital Art School”에 첫 해외작가로 영국 NHS 환자들을 위해 gestural painting 워크샵을 진행했다. 곧 11월에 열리는 Horasis Asia Meeting 중 아트섹션의 <Contemporary Asian Art Reimagined>에서 한국과 동남아시아를 대표하는 패널 스피커로 참여했다.
