Sebastian Iivonen (b.1997) was born in Stockholm, Sweden where he began his piano studies at the age of six with Natalia Kazimirovskaia and Tamara Poddubnaya. He has then received his Bachelors degree at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm/Edsberg Manor studied under Mats Widlund.
At the age of 9, Sebastian was the winner of 2007 Steinway Piano Competition in Stockholm. A year later, he made his concerto debut at the at the Stockholm Concert Hall with the Stockholm Youth Symphony-Orchestra (SUSO) performing Kabalevsky Piano Concerto No.3 where the magazine “RUMBA” wrote; “It is touching to see a ten-year-old handle the piano on that level”. Then at the age of 12, Sebastian made his sold-out solo recital debut at the Centro Cultural in Los Cristianos, Tenerife in 2010. In the same year, he was also awarded with the prestigious “Mai von Rosens Scholarship” in Stockholm. In 2012, Sebastian was invited by ”The Vladimir Spivakov Foundation” to perform at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow. Since then, he has won first prizes at 2008 Concours International de Piano “Simone Delbert Fevriér” in France, 2009 Concours International de Piano Côte D’azur in France, Stockholm International Music Competition in 2010/2011/2012/2015, 2016 “Young Artists” Stockholm and 2016 Nilüfer Piano International Music Competition in Turkey.
Sebastian is both active as a soloist and a chamber musician in various important national and international music festivals in Europe and U.S.A. He has received masterclasses with internationally recognized artists and professors such as Rena Shereshevskaya, Stephen Kovacevich, Leif Ove Andsnes, Konstantin Scherbakov, Sergei Edelmann, Paul Roberts, Erik T. Tawaststjerna, Roland Pöntinen et al.
Last year, Sebastian represented Sweden in two major international piano competitions in both 76th Concours de Genève and 64th Busoni International Piano Competition.
Since 2020, Sebastian has been the Artist-in-Residence at the Ingesund Piano Center in Arvika, Sweden where he is currently studying with Julia Mustonen-Dahlkvist. This year, he has been appointed as the ambassador for 2022-23 EPTA-Sweden (European Piano Teachers Association) where he is described as a “…young rising star in the very beginning of his career who is for the upcoming years, going to be the face outwards for EPTA Sweden and a positive role model for upcoming generations”.

Sebastian påbörjade sina pianostudier vid sex års ålder för Natalia Kazimirovskaia, som sedan kom att vara hans professor fram tills våren 2017. Under gymnasieåren (2014-2017) studerade Sebastian privat för prof. Tamara Poddubnaya (Long Island Conservatory, New York). Sebastian påbörjade sina kandidatstudier för prof. Mats Widlund vid Kungliga Musikhögskolan/Edsbergs slott hösten 2017.
Sebastian är sedan hösten 2020 Artist in Residence vid Ingesund Piano Center, och studerar för hans nuvarande professor Julia Mustonen-Dahlkvist.
Som nioåring, vann Sebastian sin första pianotävling, Steinway Pianotävling 2007 i Stockholm. Därefter fortsatte tävlandet på internationell nivå. Mellan åren 2007-2016, deltog Sebastian i 19 internationella pianotävlingar i nio olika länder. Resultatet blev 19 pallplaceringar varav 16 förstapriser.
År 2008 gjorde Sebastian, som tioåring, sin orkesterdebut med SUSO (Stockholms Ungdoms Symfoniorkester) på Stockholms Konserthus tillsammans med Glenn Mossop. Där framfördes en del ur Kabalevskys 3e pianokonsert.
Sebastian gjorde sina första programmerade internationella solo-recitaler som tolvåring vid ett utsålt Centro Cultural i staden Los Cristianos på Teneriffa. I programmet fanns verk av J.S Bach, W.A. Mozart, E.Grieg, F. Chopin, S. Rachmaninoff m.fl. Samma år vart Sebastian tilldelad det prestigefyllda Mai von Rosens stipendium 2010, i Stockholm. I Maj 2012 vart Sebastian inbjuden av “The Vladimir Spivakov Foundation”, för att medverka i en konsert vid Tchaikovsky Concert Hall i Moskva.
Sebastian har under sin karriär varit aktiv som solist och kammarmusiker i flertalet nationella och internationella musikfestivaler i Europa och U.S.A. Han har fått möjligheten att delta i masterclasses för världskända musiker och professorer som Rena Shereshevskaya, Stephen Kovacevich, Leif Ove Andsnes, Konstantin Scherbakov, Sergei Edelmann, Paul Roberts, Erik T. Tawaststjerna, Roland Pöntinen m.fl.
Sebastian har representerat Sverige i två prestigefyllda internationella pianotävlingar under året 2022, 76th Concours de Genève och 64th Busoni Competition. Under säsongerna 2022-2023 utsågs Sebastian till att bli Ambassadör för EPTA-Sweden (European Piano Teachers Association), med motiveringen; “…en ung lovande pianist i början av sin karriär som under kommande år kommer vara ett ansikte utåt för EPTA Sweden och en positiv förebild för kommande generationer”.

Jason Bae is the Founder & Music Director of Afflatus Ensemble and has recently finished his two-year role as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Conducting Fellowship Programme Conductor in 2020/21. Jason made his debut in Stockholm, conducting the Aurora Festival Orchestra - presenting the Swedish premiere of "Violent, Violent Sea" by the American composer, Missy Mazzoli. Last year, Jason gave the New Zealand Premiere of Lotta Wennäkoski's "Nosztalgiaim" with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra National Youth Orchestra. This year, Jason will make his debut with string ensemble of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and KammerensembleN in Stockholm.
He has received masterclasses with renowned conductors such as Osmo Vänskä with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Jorma Panula with South Denmark Philharmonic Orchestra, Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, Vaasa City Orchestra, Hamish McKeich, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Holly Mathieson and Gemma New with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Formerly trained as a pianist, Jason became an official Steinway Artist in 2016 and an Austrian Gramophone Artist since 2015. He has received his Master of Arts in piano performance with the highest distinction award, 'DipRAM' at the Royal Academy of Music in London studied under the Professor Emeritus Christopher Elton and Joanna MacGregor in 2015. Jason then further studied orchestral conducting and was mentored by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Currently, he has been accepted to study his second Masters Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm as the only recipient receiving the entire full scholarship from the college.
